“DISGRACE TO COUNTRY”
CONDITION OF BACK-BLOCK ROADS. STATEMENT BY COUNCILLOR. “The roads in the Upper Taueru Riding are a disgrace to this county,” remarked Councillor J. Donald at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council. “They are only sheep tracks.” he added, “and it is essential that some of our up-to-date machinery should be used on the roads. When the council purchased our expensive machinery we thought it would be used on back-block roads, but that has not been the case.” Councillor G. Moore:“ I can sympathise with you.” Councillor Donald: “The trouble is that we are maintaining too high a standard on roads close to town and too low a standard on the back country roads. We are building speedways near towns.” Councillor H. H. Mawley: “When you inspect riding roads it makes you wonder if back-block settlers are getting a fair go.” The Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, said there was no doubt that something would have to be done. The matter was referred to the member for the riding, the Clerk and the Overseer to attend to.
