MARTINBOROUGH

TENNIS CLUB’S SEASON (“Times-Age” Special) The annual report of the Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club recorded that the club, after endeavouring unsuccessfully for many years to win the Gawith Shield, succeeded last season, after defeating Memorial by 13 games to 11, Masterton by 13 to 11, and Carterton by 16 to 8, in becoming the holders of the trophy and in having the right to be termed the premier club team of the Wairarapa. This effort, the report stated, was all the more meritorious, insofar as the Wairarapa team last year was undefeated in the Christie Cup competition. Members were urged to increase the membership. During the season several improvements were effected. The tournament was again a great success, showing a net return of nearly £25. Special mention was made of the sterling work of the ladies’ committee, of the president, Mrs W. J. Martin and other officers.
