Arrested at 1.30 yesterday morning in Britomart Place, Richard Henry Arthur Chatfield, aged 24, motor mechanic, admitted in the Magistrates’ Court that he was in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor-car. The police said that a constable saw the car pull up and found Chatfield silting on the rear bumper of the vehicle. He was intoxicated, but not drunk in the ordinary sense. He admitted to the constable that he had taken liquor, having driven a friend home after a cabaret and had beer and gin. Counsel said that Chatfield had, previously borne an unblemished character. Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., imposed a fine of £25 and cancelled the defendant’s licence for 18 months. He said that men should not take liquor when they knew they had to drive motorcars.
