PROTEST BY BUTCHER
OBJECTION TO UNLICENSED HAWKING. SYMPATHY EXPRESSED BY MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. As a protest against unlicensed carts being used for vending meat in the streets,.Fred Meakin, a butcher, refused to take out a licence for his shop. These circumstances were revealed in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Meakin was charged with failing to license his shop. Counsel pointed out that some retailers were able to sell meat from vehicles which had no refrigerator or water supply, and which were open to the dust on the street, without requiring a hawker’s licence. This was achieved by carrying orders for delivery and a surplus of meat from which customers could choose. “I am in sympathy with you because I hold strong views on the hawking of goods from the street,” said Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in convicting Meakin and ordering him to pay solicitors’ fees.
