WEEKEND CITY

AN ALSACE BEAUTY SPOT. A weekend city, the first of its kind, is to be constructed at Malvaux, near Belfort, one of the beauty spots of Alsace, by the municipality of Belfort. Weekend City will be inhabited only at weekends and on holidays. On other days it will be a deserted village. It will be formed entirely of small but comfortable wooden villas. As an inducement, land in Weekend City is being offered free, and architects’ plans are also free, and material with which to build the villas is also a donation. All the proprietor has to do is to pay for the labour of building. The experiment is being watched with keen interest, and if it should prove successful weekend cities will become popular all over Alsace where wood from the pine forests is abundant and many sites are available close to towns.
