ROAD RACE
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, This Day. Under a sunny, cloudless sky, with a cool north-easterly breeze, 84 starters turned out this morning for the annual Timaru-Christchurch road race, organised by the Mairehau Cycling Club. The event is over a distance of 112 miles for the New Zealand "road cham-
pionship. The limit men left the mark at 8.45 a.m., the rest of the programme being up to time. The scratch men were dispatched at 9.35 a.m. The entries cover most of the South Island, and include most of the North Island s prominent riders. There was a large crowd of spectators to see the riders off at. the Grand Hotel corner, from which the competitors got a good downhill start. The superintendent at Timaru was Mr W. H. Hall, the official starters being the Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweed and Messrs H. H. Fraser and J. O’Leary.
