OPAKI TRACK WORK

USEFUL GALLOPS THIS MORNING. MASTERTON CANDIDATES DO WELL. (By “The Cynic.”) There was some interesting track and training work at Opaki this morning. The tresles were out thirty feet on the course proper, which was in splendid order after overnight rain. Lucullus Lad, Gay Chou, Colfort and Lady Melfort all showed out well and are in good form for next week’s Masterton meeting. Night Storm, a Nursery Handicap candidate, and Rowana, who figures in the Lansdowne Handicap, did easy work on the plough. Mr J. Jameson’s Saki went an easy mile and a quarter, coming fairly fast over the last three furlongs. Kindly, pulling hard as usual, was kept down to a little more than half pace. Lady Montana went a useful gallop. She is standing up to her early preparation well. Lady Melfort, who ran fourth at Otaki last week, cut out a half mile on the course proper in 54sec. It was a useful solo effort. Lucullus Lad and Gay Chou were companions over seven furlongs. Jenkins has both in great fettle. They cut out a fast middle three furlongs and then eased off. There was an interesting half mile gallop between Rose Mimetic, Binkie and White Rajah. The Australian-bred White Rajah came home ahead of Rose, Mimetic and Binkie in 55sec. Colfort, looking fit, was doing it a little better than Nereus over the final stages of a half mile, cut out in 54Jsec. Doctor Defoe, a Maiden candidate, finished a half a dozen lengths in front of Greek Arma. They did seven furlongs in Imin lOsec, after covering the first furlong in 13sec. Doctor Defoe is in good order.
