THE MASTERTON RACES.

JN view of its excellent organisation and established popularity, the Masterion Racing Club should be able to count upon a full measure of support at its meeting next week in spite of the fact that it has unfortunately been deprived by circumstances of the opportunity of including a Saturday as one of its two racing days. It is anticipated that any disability thus occasioned will be largely offset by a general response of Masterton business firms to the request of the Mayor and the Retailers’ Association that they should close their premises from noon on Thursday next, the second day of the meeting at Opaki. During recent years the club has had to contend at times against very serious financial and other difficulties. That it has nevertheless been able to maintain its course and appointments at Opaki in splendid order bears witness to the established place it holds in the life of the district and to the broad measure of support upon which it is able to count. The ability of the club to maintain the high standards it has set in conducting an important provincial meeting of course depends very largely upon the amount of patronage it is accorded on its racing days. The decision of the club to proceed with its meeting this year in spite of the loss of a Saturday has been very generally commended by followers of racing and with good fields and a promise of excellent sport there should be satisfactory attendances of the public at Opaki on Wednesday and Thursday next.
