RAID PRECAUTIONS
* PREPARATIONS BACKWARD IN LONDON FIRE-FIGHTING & OTHER SERVICES. LACK OF NECESSARY MEN AND EQUIPMENT. (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, October 6. Had war broken out and London had been bombed it must have paid a terrible price as the result of backwardness of air raid precautions, is the conclusion of the London County Council committee’s report. Auxiliary fire-fighting services lacked necessary men and equipment. Ambulance services were short of vehicles and drivers. Though 30,000 ’auxiliary firemen were required, only 4,200 were enrolled by September 24. A further 6,000 joined up as the result of an urgent appeal last week, but there was no time to train them.
