JAPANESE LOSSES

HUNDRED THOUSAND KILLED IN YANGTSE VALLEY DURING TWO MONTHS’ FIGHTING. ACCORDING TO CHINESE REPORT. (Bv Telegraph —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Hankow: — South of Shangcheng, in Honan, there has been sanguinary fighting. The enemy launched general offensives, one after another, but all were repulsed, the enemy suffering more than 10,000 losses. We captured over ten hills. Realising that their attacks had been fruitless, the enemy removed their troops elsewhere. Our air force bombed Loshan, inflicted heavy losses and frustrated the enemy's retreat to Sinyang. There has been fierce fighting in the Juichang sector, south of the Yangtsekiang River. In an incessant bombardment of our positions, the Japanese used gas shells. It appears that fighting will be centred on this sector. During two months’ fighting on the banks of the Yangtse River, the Japanese have sustained no less than 100,000 casualties. •
