The President, Dr Benes, has resigned, and General Sirovy is being appointed Provisional President, pending the summoning of the National Assembly, to elect a new President. It is understood that Germany exerted pressure to secure Dr Benes’s resignation. Herr Hitler revealed at Nuremberg that he had a personal animus against Dr Benes and it is believed that he promised more generous negotiations if the Czech leader were changed. SIROVY BROADCASTS High Tribute to Retiring President OUTLINE OF INTENDED POLICY (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) PRAGUE, October 5. General Sirovy, broadcasting, paid tribute to Dr Benes, as a model of endurance and sense of responsibility. He added that the Czech policy aimed at the friendly relations with neighbours which were necessary for security. The internal policy would be based on a wide decentralisation of administration. Equality of the three peoples therein was aimed at, to satisfy the justified claims of the Slovaks and Sub-Carpathian Russians.
