The Japanese have captured the Panpishan fortress, on the Yangtse River bank opposite Tientchiacheng, thus breaking the first Hankow defence line. CHINESE FLEET. SUNK OR BOTTLED UP. (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) TOKIO, October 4. The Japanese Navy and Air Force claim to have sunk forty-eight Chinese warships since me outbreak of the campaign, aggregating 70 per cent of the Cmnese Fleet. Most of the remainder of the vessels are bottled up at Lake Tungting. POLAND NOT ACTING. (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) TOKIO. October 4. The Polish Ambassadoi - has informed the Foreign Office that Poland would not apply sanctions against Japan.
