ROYAL CHIEF SCORES AGAIN. A BRILLIANT VICTORY. By Telegraph —Press • Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, October 3. Royal Chief, justifying expert racing opinions, demonstrated that he is the best stayer at Randwick by coming from the rear of the field and winning today’s Metropolitan Handicap in race record time. Buzalong, who threatened most danger, was beaten by the super horse of the meeting. The jockey, Bartie, said Royal Chief galloped not too kindly early, other horses ahead hampering him. Bartie then pulled Royal Chief out and trailed Gold Rod to the home turn, whence he came home in good style, but had little in reserve at the finish. Other well-backed horses had no chance with the winner. The New Zealand representative, Beau Mari, in the Breeders’ Plate, had every chance, but the dead-heaters, Beaucaire and Royal Sceptre, had the issue between themselves at the distance. The Queenslander, Thurles Lad, confirmed his Epsom Handicap form by winning the Shorts after leading all the way. The weather was again fine, and the attendance very large. The details are: — The Shorts Handicap, 6f.: Thurles Lad, 8.8 (K. Cook), 1; Delmestor, 7.6 (Finch), 2; Bonheur de Pere, 7.0 (Lappin), 3. Twelve started. Length; three-quarters of a length. Time, 1.11.?. The Breeders’ Plate, for two-year-old colts and geldings, 5f.: Royal Sceptre, 8.5 (Hickey) and Beaucaire, 8.5 (McCarten), dead-heat, 1; Beau Mari, 8.5 (Bartie), 3. Sixteen started. Scratched: Genetout, Highborn and Will Rogers. Eighteen started. Bachelor King set a merry pace from Gold Spark, Billy Boy, Bourbon and Gold Rod. Passing the half-mile post, Billy Boy was in command with Royal Chief in the middle of the field on the rails. Buzalong shot to the front and opened a big gap turning for home, with Perimond and Gold Rod his nearest attendants. Royal
Chief, coming from behind round the field, won brilliantly by a length and a quarter. Cooranga was half a length away third. Gold Rod was a close fourth. Then came Gay Knight, Bour'bon, Silver Standard, Sir Regent and Bachelor King. Time, 2.42;? —a race record. EPSOM SAVAGING INCIDENT. SYDNEY; October 3. The “Sydney Morning Herald,” commenting on the Derby, says: “Nuffield proved himself the best stayer, and the brilliance he showed in taking the lead half a mile from the post and in stalling off the determined Aerolus, emphasised his all-round excellence. The time, which has been excelled only by •he great Phar Lap, enhanced the merit of Nuffield’s performance.” Discussing the Epsom Handicap savaging incident in which St Constant attempted to savage Bobby at the turn, grabbing the reins, the “Herald” says: “King’s Head contributed to his own defeat by Hamurah in the last Doncaster Handicap by savaging that mare. In the finish on Saturday St Constant helped King's Head by savaging Bobby when the latter was at the top of his run. Nightguard was twice kicked before the start. His failure to come on in the straight is consistent with the behaviour of a horse soured by such happenings.” The “Herald” says that Royal Chief’s victory over Avenger was one of the grandest efforts seen in a weight-for-age race at Randwick. Over the last three furlongs Royal Chief received a series of checks and a furlong from the post seemed hemmed in hopelessly, but after being pulled practically to his haunches and taken wide out Royal Chief, with a brilliant spurt, caught Avenger and won decisively.
