SPRING CATTLE FAIR
SPIRITED BIDDING AT MASTERTON. Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., report:—We held the first Spring Fair of the season yesterday and have to report a highly successful sale. There was a capacity yarding, and buyers were present from all parts of the Wairarapa, and from other districts as far away as Waverley. It is very seldom that so many outside buyers are so strongly represented at Masterton sales. We consider it one of the best cattle fairs, from a vendor’s point of view, held in this district for years. The cattle were in good order, and right from the very first pen offered, the bidding was particularly spirited, and this buoyancy was maintained throughout the sale. A strong demand was anticipated for grown bullocks, and this prophesy proved correct, for there were not enough big cattle yarded to satisfy the demand. The 2-yr. cattle made prices above expectations, but the strong enquiry for yearlings was a big feature of the sale. With the young cattle taking up a big proportion of the yarding, it was thought that this class of cattle might come down to moderate values. However, this was not the case, and the prices obtained were high, and remained on a high level throughout the sale. They met with strong local competition, and outside buyers were bidding confidently. Mr lan Macßae’s yearlings were a very select lot, being well grown and particularly well bred. The line of 55 blacks created a lot of interest and after keen bidding were knocked down for £7—top price of the day for yearlings. . Female cattle sold well, the West Coast graziers bidding very freely, especially for cows. In comparison with the older - female cattle, yearling heifers were not so good, but 2-yr. heifers and store cows were well above paddock quotations. Only a small entry of fats came forward and made values about on a par with late sales. The following are particulars of our realisations: —A/c Glendonald Station, 3 and 4-yr. bullocks, £lO 4s; fat bullocks, £l2, £l2 17s 6d, £l3 Is; a/c Kummer Bros., 2-yr. P.A. steers, £8 ss; 2-yr. DALGETY & CO. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report on their first Spring Cattle Fair held at Masterton yesterday as follows: —A full yarding of classes of station cattle were penned, and met with a keen sale from a large and representative attendance, buyers being present from Wanganui, Palmerston North, Feilding, Patea, Southern Hawke’s Bay and all the local districts. The outside buyers operated freely on grown bullacks and good condition cows with the result that a large number of cattle were bought to leave the district. The cattle generally were of good breeding and had come through the winter looking exceptionally well. The yarding consisted chiefly of yearling and 2-year cattle, tne number of grown bullocks being limited and the latter met with a spirited sale and sold at prices in excess of those ruling at fairs held of late in neighbouring districts. The prices for yearling and 2-year steers were also in our opinion up at least 10s to 15s per head. Female cattle were also in strong demand and empty forward condition cows and 2 and 3-year heifers made good values. Included in our entry were some very attractive lines of 3-year steers and 4year bullocks, and as at this sale last year Mrs J. C. Wrigley (Bideford) topped the market for the day in the store pens with a very nice pen of 3year P.A. steers at £ll Is. Another attractive consignment of 3 and 4-year bullocks offered on account of Mr D. H. S. Riddiford, Lagoon Hill, attracted attention, selling at £lO Is for a nice line of P.A., £9 14s for a line of Herefords and £9 6s for a pen of store conditioned Shorthorns. The top price in our entry for 2-year steers was obtained with an attractive line of 2year P.A. steers offered on account of L. Meredith (in conjunction) these falling to the bid of £B. The annual draft of yearling P.A. steers from Otahome station and Mr W. A. King again topped the sale in our entry, in the yearling section, and after spirited competition fell to the bid of £6, and a line of forward conditioned P.A. cows offered on account of the same vendors made £6 6s. Our top price for 3-year P.A. heifers obtained with an attractive line offered on account Estate late W. T. Wrigley, which made £6, and in the 2-year section a nicely bred pen of P.A. heifers fell to the bid of £5 14s. The fat cattle yarded met a slightly improved market and the specially advertised line of cows and heifers offered on account Mr J. P. Perry, Sulphur Wells, made £9 4s for the first pen, the second £8 16s, and a pen of heifers £9 15s. A total clearance was effected. The yarding came forward in good order and comprised mostly yearlings. The few big bullocks met with keen competition and sold at prices easily £1 to £1 5s per head better than recent paddock sales. Yearlings also sold much better than anticipated, and very good yearlings made about the £6 mark. Cows and 2-year empty heifers were in keen demand while yearling heifers seemed to be reasonable in comparison with other values. Buyers were present from many outside districts.
