YOUTH DROWNED
TRAGIC END TO HOLIDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 3. A tragic ending to a holiday visit to Port Chalmers overtook Jack Bowen, aged 19 years, who resided at 133 Wallace Street, Wellington, when he was drowned near Quarantine Island at about 3 o’clock this afternoon. A dinghy in which he and a companion were setting fishing nets was struck by a heavy swell and overturned. Bowen availed himself of an opportunity to set off .on a fishing expedition in a launch which was going down the harbour to set nets near lsland. When the launch reached its destination Bowen and a companion named Harry Ross, aged 19 years, residing at Port Chalmers, set off in a dinghy to set fishing nets. They had got some distance,, away from the launch and were engaged in their task when a heavy swell struck the rowingboat, which overturned. Both youths were set a difficult task in their clothes and in the choppy water to reach the launch, and Bowen became exhausted and disappeared. Ross did everything he could to rescue his companion, but his efforts were unavailing, and he was compelled to abandon his attempts and make for the launch, which he reached in an exhausted condition.
