AUSTRALIANS BEAT BUDGE AND MAKO PACIFIC COAST DOUBLES SEMI-FINAL LOS ANGELES, October 2. Playing spectacular tennis,’ Hopman and Schwartz defeated Budge and Mako, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals of the double in the Pacific South-West Coast championships. Hopman’s headwork was superb and his stroking inspired Schwartz. The Australians were cheered to the echo by a crowd of 3000 as Hopman pulled his service from the fire in the fourth set to win the deciding game. The Australians lost only one game apiece on their services in the last three sets. In the singles Hopman defeated Bromwich, 6-3, 6-3, 10-8, after the latter had led 5-1, 40-30, in the final set. Hopman and Quist meet in the final tomorrow. In the women’s singles Miss Lumb defeated Miss Wynne, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; Madame Mathieu defeated Mrs Hopman, 6-2, 6-3. SINGLES FINAL. QUIST BEATS HOPMAN.
