REMOUNT SCHEME

SELECTION OF KIOSK. (By “The Administrator.”) An interesting announcement is the fact that Kiosk has been selected in the Wairarapa as the subsidised stallion under the Remount scheme. This innovation is something on the lines of the system established in England, where certain stallions receive what is known as the “King’s Premium” —in other words a cash subsidy from the Government, and breeders with approved mares are encouraged to breed remounts at a reduced fee. Kiosk was a very fast horse himself, won several handicaps and at least four classic races, but it is his breeding that is so interesting to a student of pedigrees, His sire, Tea Tray, who was imported some years ago, is by the illustrious The Tetrarch, a gray horse, who, when winning all his engagements as a twoyear-old with ease, was known as “The Spotted Wonder.” The Tetrarch was never even challenged, and won all his races so easily that it was really never known how fast he was or what times he would have recorded if seriously pressed. Of course he was the winter favourite for the Epsom Derby, but failed to train on, went to the stud, and was an immediate success. Tetratema won the St Leger, and has since been a successful sire, thus following in his sire’s footsteps. Kiosk is from Rosie Desmond, who was by Farasi and is a member of the No. 11 family. It is of special significance that the very successful site Chief Ruler was also by the same sire as Tea Tray, who now has no less than 44 mares by him in the New Zealand Stud Book, so there is no danger of the line dying out. Chief Ruler, now deceased, has 56. Lackham (sire of Golden Wings and Mala and hosts of other winners), Leighton, a successful sire, and King John were by The Tetrarch’s sire Rio Herode, so it can be seen the line is a proved winning one in New Zealand. King John was, unfortunately, lost in the Wellington Harbour by drowning. It is not known what other candidates were submitted for the honour of being the first subsidised stallion under the Remount scheme, but Kiosk was selected from a choice of five.
