CARBUNCLES

DANGERS AND CURE. Both boils and carbuncles are caused by the infection of one or more hair roots by germs. In the case of carbuncles, the infection is more virulent, and a number of hair roots is involved. Carbuncles should always be regarded seriously, and should always receive skilled treatment. They occur very commonly in the case of diabetic patients, and all sufferers should be examined for this disease.

The treatment depends upon the stage at which it is seen and the size and. severity of the infection. In most cases, an operation under general anaesthesia is necessary. If only home treatment is available, the part should be completely rested, and foments applied just as described in the case of boils. Carbuncles on the neck and face are especially dangerous, as there is some risk of spread to the brain and meningitis. Some people are subject to repeated attacks of boils, and many are the drugs and other substances that are recommended to prevent this. Of these, there is some evidence that fresh yeast is of value, but the best treatment is to have a course of vaccines,
