W.A.C.C. v. EXCELSIOR On Saturday a team representing the Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club played a match with the Excelsior ladies. After a hard fought game in which some unorthodox hockey was witnessed, some doubt existing as to the score, as the Cyclists had found the net with “monotonous regularity.” A cycling club supporter gave the score as 8-6, in favour of the cyclists, but after consultation with the Excelsior assistant coach, it was decided to call the game a draw. Of the cyclists, K. Woollett, D. Wishart, C. Gourlay, J. Duckett, the goal keeper, and J. McAliece, all did well, especially the latter, who took the ball from the feet of four Excelsior forwards and ran the whole length of the field to score a fine goal. Of the others, C. Dykes must be mentioned, as his defence was responsible for Excelsior’s first two goals! The Excelsior team although definitely over-shadowed, played pluckily, Misses N. Page, H. and J. Harding, M. Henderson, E. Barnes, Fawcett, Rayner, Smith and their goalkeeper being outstanding.
The game’ was ably controlled by Messrs A. Kay and J. Moynahan. The former did his best for the Cyclists, while the latter favoured each side in turn! After the game the players were entertained at afternoon tea, provided by the ladies, and both sides expressed the hope that the game would be qn annual event. The players thoroughly enjoyed the game, although a Sunday message from the Cyclists intimated that they were suffering from stiff joints and sore shins.

However after about ten minutes they settled down better, and play became fast and hard. Wesley went to the attack and Faulknor, Harrington and Wise bustled the College backs for Stalker to goal. College attacked, Andrews, however, broke up the attack, and sent a long pass up to Faulknor. This player made a great solo run, and beating both the backs sent in a hot shot from an angle and "Wesley led 2-0. Just before half time E. Jane and D. Tooby combined well to put College in a good position. D. Tooby’s shot was blocked, and from a scramble in the circle, D. Spiers opened the College account. Wesley 2, College 1. Though Wesley led, the honours of the spell went to College. The second spell saw the pace slacken up a bit, but play was more exciting. College were not long in evening up the score. D. Harding was the referee. , , , For’ College both full backs played well, but their two star backs were W” Nicol and J. Harrington. J. Harrington is only a little chap, but was the best back on the ground. D. Tooby was outstanding in the forwards. For Wesley, A. Andrews, Ferguson, L. Harrington stood up to most of the defensive work while Faulknor and R. Harrington were always dangerous on attack.
FRIENDLY GAMES Two interesting friendly matches were played at Lansdowne on Saturday, when the Wairarapa Cycling Club team met and defeated the Excelsior senior ladies by fi-6, and the Kiwi ladies team defeated the Kiatere harrier team by 5-3. In the first game the cyclists were not hampered by skirts, and were too fast for the ladies, while some of them were well up in the art of handling a stick. The harriers, however, were in long skirts, which kept their speed in check. Several of the harriers were heard to remark that they would sooner run 6 miles than play the ladies again. The teams and referees were entertained to afternoon. tea by the ladies after the games.
