HAIRDRESSING MODES

TOUCH OF THE NINETIES. HIGH-CURLED STYLES. Hairdressing modes are going to be gay with a touch of the ’nineties this summer, according to a London newspaper. Invisible hairpins, clips, and grips will again be in demand, for hair is going up. While the Paris dress designers have been launching their latest creations, hair stylists have also devised new ways with plaits, puffs, and coronets of curls that are entirely in keeping with the latest fashion picture in frocks and the higher millinery. More attention will be given to hair styling, since so many women have found that the vogue of the bob or shingle has done their hair good, and they are now ready to experiment with different ways of dressing hair that has been allowed to grow a little longer and is certainly more luxuriant. Garbo-esque hair styles are not always easy to manage, and are suited only to certain types of features, and those who wish to make a complete change in appearance are trying out the new combed-out and brushed-back effect, crowned with a bunch of curls slightly raised at the top of the head. A coronet of flatter curls, higher at one side in front and flattened above the ears, is another idea. These higher dressings are not easy to do at first, and it is advisable to allow an expert to show one how to arrange the brush-ed-up side pieces, the back and front sections, and twist of the top curls in the finished coiffure.

The cluster of curls has to be poised at the correct angle if it is to enhance the profile, and the style is to prove a becoming frame for the features. To be a success the head silhouette must be every whit as shapely with the hair “up” as when dressed in the shorter manner. A touch of brilliantine will give a well-groomed look. Although the high-curled styles are reminiscent of the pictures of Mrs Langtry, Mary Anderson, and other famous'beauties of past days, and evidently take their inspiration from the elaborate hair modes of the late nineteenth century, there is a modern simplicity of line that is most becoming to present-day women. The hair puffed and curled is posed over a soft side wave, and though the actual doing may take a little more time, the result is distinguished, and a definite change from the sleek, permanently waved head of hair with a roll of curls in the nape of the neck, an almost universal vogue that has been apt to make every head look more or less alike. There is a hint of the Alexandrine fringe, which, curiously perhaps, becomes modern make-up when arranged

with a smoothly brushed-up almos cushioned look at the side, above the ears, showing the charm of a youthfu contour of the neck at the back of the head. The slightly curved fringe, covering the brow at one side or the centre of the forehead, is also a becoming hair vogue for faces that are toe long. Much of the charm or rue new season’s hair fashions is that hair is being allowed to assume the beauty of its own natural tint, helped, perhaps, with a brightening rinse. Waving, too, is wider and more natural in appearance. Nut brown hair, the midblondes, mid-brunettes, and the Cinderella types gain charm and distinction with this new vogue of artistic hairdressing. For the older woman the higher coiffures are given a more sculptured look. Curls there are, but arranged less carelessly. There is sophistication in their use in softening the line of the temples, and often the arrangement of the coiffure has a downward trend at the back of the neck which helps the facial and throat contours. Plaits and twisted loops are introduced. The diadem plait or a twist, brought around the crown of the head with a soft wave at the brushed-up side and above the brow and tiny curls over the temples, proves a becoming vogue for silvery hair. In this new phase of hair fashion the care of the hair becomes more important than ever, for the best dressed head in the world can be spoiled when tresses are dull aid lifeless. Constant treatment in the matter of frequent shampoos, daily scalp massage, and brushing is needed to keep hair in good condition.
