ZONE EXCURSIONS
FRENCH RAILWAY TRIPS. A new idea in excursions from Paris has been introduced by the French National Railways. An excursion circle with Paris as its centre, and circumference sixty miles from the capital, is divided into six zones, and whether the tripper travels north, south, east jr west, he pays one rate for each zone. The advantage of the system is that the traveller can book to any station in a particular zone and return from any other station within that zone. This makes possible all sorts of interesting combinations of railway travel and walking, cycle rides or canoe trips. The zone excursion tickets, valid foi’ Sunday only or for the weekend, work out roughly at Is, Is 3d, Is lOd, 2s 2d, Is 8d and 3s 4d, these fares being increased by about fifteen per cent for weekend tickets. A tripper who after alighting at a station has wandered far ind finds himself in another zone beyond that to which he is entitled may return from it on payment of a small supplement. These zone excursions are proving particularly popular with the public, cyclists and canoeists taking advan-
tage of them (there is a garage for canoes at the Quai d’Orsay station), and the French National Railways are issuing attractive booklets for pedestrians, cyclists and canoeists, as well as for lovers of fishing, showing exactly where they can go and how cheaply they can go there.
