FEATHERSTON

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston School Committee, held on Tuesday evening, was presided over by Mr J. W. Holland, who extended a welcome to the new headmaster, Mr Hayes. The secretary, Mr C. C. Kenward, stated that the credit balance was £95 3s 4d, and accounts totalling £9 15s 9d were passed.. Messrs S. Murphy and J. W. Henderson were appointed as the Featherston delegates on the Wairarapa Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Association, a meeting of which is to be held in the school, Featherston, on Friday night. Plans of the proposed new class rooms were submitted in the open air type and semi-open air design. The open air design was not thought suitable for Featherston, and it was resolved to approve the semi-open design.

The headmaster reported that the transport of 27 Waiorongomai children to Featherston school was now working smoothly. The numbers on the roll were: Primary 269, secondary 49. Inspectors Partridge and Stubbs had visited the school on September 8 and 9, and their reports showed a very satisfactory state of affairs. Inquiry is to be made as to the conditions for competing for the Sir Walter Buchanan Shield for swimming, which is now held by the Carterton school. ■ Personal. Mr F. E. A. Dohnt, who has been a resident of Featherston for many years, is leaving to reside in Masterton. During his residence in Featherston he has taken a very keen interest in public matters. He has taken a very active part in cricket, holding the club together on several occasions when interest was at a low ebb. Mr Dohnt also takes considerable interest in other sports and his departure from Featherston will be regretted. Golf. A Stableford and eclectic competition were played by the ladies on the Gum Grove links on Wednesday. Results: Mrs McCarthy 1, Miss Williams 2, Miss Bloxam 3. Flower Show.
