CARTERTON
ELECTORAL BOUNDARIES. ("Times-Age” Special.) Over a period of years since 1908 the North-Western boundary of the Wairarapa electorate has varied considerably. Prior to that, the Waingawa to the Tararuas formed a natural boundary. In 1908 the boundary was shifted over the river, just past the Solway School, and continued in a line to Railway Road, all the settlers on the left side being included in the Wairarapa electorate. In Renall Street, on the southern side, the residents were all included in Wairarapa right to the hills but on the other side it was Masterton until Kibblewhite Road was reached. This road then formed the boundary to Akura, and thence via the upper Opaki Road to Mount Bruce, as far as the Ruamahanga bridge. Thus Matahiwi and Miki Miki electors too all assisted to supply the necessary quota for Wairarapa. After a period the western boundary was put back from Kibblewhite Road to the road leading to the settlement just before reaching Kaituna. Mr H. Gorringe’s house, then on the corner, was in Masterton and his farm buildings on the opposite side were in Wairarapa. On the southern side of the Upper Plain Road, the boundary was put back from Railway Road to the road leading past Mr H. Evans’s farm. In 1922 the Wairarapa was extended to the south over the Rimutaka Hill, taking in Kaitoke and farm lands adjacent thereto. In 1925 the district immediately to the west of Masterton was returned to the Masterton electorate much to the satisfaction of both electorates. Wairarapa received another bombshell when it was announced that their electorate was to be extended to as far as Upper Hutt. To make matters worse this election a further block has been appropriated, embracing Heretaunga, a district also without any community of interest with the Wairarapa. To make up for the population thus gained, the district loses a large area, including almost all the Taratahi plain, Carrington, Belvedere and nearly the whole of the properties on Lincoln Road, Carterton, on which the saleyards are situated and which are about a half mile'from the Carterton Post Office. A petition concerning the in elusion, of certain areas near Carterton was prepared and sent to headquarters, but without avail. It is to be hoped that when the matter of boundaries is again given attention a more equitable appointment is arrived at. At the moment the Wairarapa electorate extends from Mataikona, many miles north of Castlepoint on the East Coast to as far south as Palliser Bay, and on the western side from the point adjacent to Carterton Borough to as far south as Heretaunga. It can be understood that candidates must do considerable travelling to cover all the electorate in the limited time available. Golf. The Carterton ladies’ golf draw for a bogey round to be played on October’ 1 is as follows: —Mrs Booth v. Miss Smart; Miss Berrill v. Miss Lamb; Mrs Orr v. Miss Armstrong; Miss Welch v. Mrs Dalgleish; Mrs Callendar v. Mrs Riggs; Mrs Moon v. Mrs Robinson; Miss M. Campbell v. Miss I. Corlett; Mrs Ross v. Miss Peters; Miss Booth v. Mrs Forbes; Mrs Murray v. Mrs Brown; Miss Hamer v. Miss Freer; Miss Stevens, Miss Orr and Miss V. Corlett. In charge of afternoon tea, Miss Lamb and Mrs Ross. Official Transferred. ’ Reference was -made by the chairman, Mr B. E. Keiller, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington District Pig Council to the transfer to Dunedin of Mr H. R. Denize, Stock Inspector for the Palmerston North district. Mr Denize had been closely associated with the pig industry in the district and Mr Keiller said his departure was very keenly regretted, although they would congratulate him on his merited promotion. Personal. Mr G. B. Challis, Garrison Street, Carterton, left on Monday for Wellington, where he will take up a position in the State Advances Office.
