THE ROCK GARDEN
MOST IMPORTANT SEASON. Spring is the most important season imthe rock garden, and an effort should be made to have everything tidy and as attractive as possible. Any accumulations of dead leaves, sticks, and other refuse should be cleared away, bul moss •on stones should be retained where it is desired to give an appearance of age. See that the strongergrowing plants do not encroach on other weaker-growing subjects, as choice plants may be lost if this is permitted. Where the roots of established plants have become exposed by continual rains a good topdressing of soil should be applied over them. Rock plants, planted in spring, require to be well watered after planting if the soil is at all dry, in order to give them a good start in their new positions, and if dry weather should prevail later the watering may have to be repeated until the plants have made fresh roots to penetrate deeply in search of moisture.
