DOSING WITH IRON
DOSING WITH IRON. HIGH NUTRITIONAL VALUE. In experiments conducted on Warnford Farm Estate, England, it was found that the haemoglobin value (that is, really, the iron content) of piglets not dosed with iron compounds falls rapidly during the first 17 days until it is often only half the value at birth. At this stage they are on the verge of anaemia. The haemoglobin of the dosed piglets remains at its birth value and even rises above it. These tests proved that it was essential to dose piglets with iron and copper, or to turn them out where they can get iron from the soil or grass. At six weeks, when the piglets were weighed, it was found that those which had been dosed were very much heavier than those not dosed with iron and copper. The average of those dosed was 29.21 b.; the average of those not dosed was 23.41 b. The difference of 5.81 b, was considered most important.
