The Governor-General, Lord Galway, will pay a private visit to to Masterton tomorrow night, when he will be the guest of the Masonic lodges of the Wairarapa at a function in the Masonic Hall. Mr C. Robinson, who has been the guest of his grandmother, Mrs R. Brown, Essex Street, Masterton, has returned to Dunedin. The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Education, returned to Wellington yesterday. Last night he delivered a. political address at Levin. Mr H. Scrimshaw, of Tauherenikau, who has been under treatment at the Masterton Hospital for several weeks as the result of an accident, will return home on Thursday. ■. Major G. G. Hancox, E.D., of Masterton. has returned to Masterton after having attended at Wanganui a weekend bivJouac of the Wellington West Coast Regiment. Mr O. H. Burford, a member of the Wanganui Education Board’s accountancy staff, was last night appointed secretary of the New Plymouth High School’s hoard from 114 applicants, to succeed Mr E. Lash, who will retire at the end of November. For the position of chairman of the board of governors of the Wellington Technical College, ( two nominations, those of Mr W. Appleton, and Mr J. Read, were received at last night’s, meeting of the board, and, after a ballot, Mr Appleton was declared elected. Having overtaxed himself in his vigorous campaign to raise funds for building the Anglican Cathedral, the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev H. St Barbe Holland, acting on his doctor’s orders, left Wellington yesterday' to take a complete rest in the country. He has cancelled his engagements, and will take no part in Church affairs until his return about October 15. In the meantime all diocesan business will be administered by the Vicar-General, Archdeacon W. Bullock.

When Group Captain the Hon R. A. Cochrane relinquishes his position as Chief of the Air Staff next January he will be succeeded by Wing Commander H. W. L. Saunders, M.C., D.F.C., M.M. This announcement was made by ihe Minister of Defence, the Hon F. Jones, during an address at St Kilda, Dunedin, last night. The Minister said that Wing Commander Saunders would come to New Zealand possibly for two years, and he hoped that when the Government’s plan for the development of the air force was completed it would be possible for a New Zealander to be sufficiently trained to take over the position of Chief of the Air Staff.

The death occurred at Wellington of Mr William Heflnry Corneal, for many years well known in the city as a tobacconist. Born at Exeter, England, in 1865, he came to Wellington while still quite young, and in the early ’nineties established a tobacconist’s business in what is now Courtenay Place. The ;ame premises are now occupied by Messrs T. and F. Boffa, Mr T. Boffa learning his trade under Mr Corneal and later joining him in partnership, m 1904 Mr Boffa bought out Mr Corneal’s interest in the partnership, and Mr Corneal continued on his own account in other businesses in Tory Street, Courtenay Place, Taranaki Street, and Kilbirnie. He was keenly interested in racing, and in the early days of settlement at Lyall Bay caused considerable interest by training racehorses on the beach. Mr Corneal was also keenly interested in the volunteer movement and for some years was a member of the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles. He is survived by a widow and a grown-up family.
