WAIRARAPA COLLEGE

MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS. LIFE-SAVING SUCCESS. The chairman, Mr W. R. Nicol, pre-i sided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors, held last night. Others present were: Messrs P. M. Smith, W. H. Saunders, A. Donald, L. J. Taylor, F. C. Daniell, W. H. Jackson and Mrs C. C. Jackson. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. J. Wright. The Principal, Mr G. G. Hancox, reported that the attendance at the day school was still affected by sickness, the average last week being 376 out of a roll of 445. Owing to the low attendance, one evening class in shorthand and one in typewriting had been dropped. Training had been commenced for the annual athletic sports meeting, to be held on Thursday, November 3. The college had been awarded the William Henry Memorial Cup for life-sav-ing for the 1937-38 season. The trophy was for competition among girls’ schools with a roll number of over 200. Credit for the success was due to Miss Mary Pither, who gave her time very generously in the first term to enable the girls to qualify. Arrangements had been made for Mr I. J. Hills to act as relieving teacher, pending the arrival of Mr R. J. Fowler, M.A. That had been possible only through the goodwill of the Wellington Education Board and the Headmaster of the Lansdowne School.

It was decided to apply to the Education Department for materials necessary to complete work in hand in the college grounds. It was reported that a fire-proof strong-room had been constructed for the storage of college records and other valuables. It was decided to send a letter of appreciation to Miss M. Pither for her, assistance in coaching the girls in lifesaving and also to the girls on their success in winning the cup. Thanks are to be expressed to the Education Board and to the Headmaster of the Lansdowne School for permitting an assistant to act as a temporary assistant at the College.
