CANADA’S OUTPOSTS
TWO SHIPS SAIL FOR TOP OF THE WORLD. MONTREAL, Canada. One of the most colourful sailings in this modern world took place recently from the Port of Montreal, Canada’s large eastern seaport, when the Hudson Bay Company vessel, the R.M.S. Nascopie, and the tiny Roman Catholic missionary ship, the Marie F. Therese. left the harbour together, both bound for the last outposts of civilisation in Canada’s Eastern Arctic regions. It was the first time the two Arctic vessel had sailed together and they left to the echoing sirens of every vessel in the harbour, from large ocean liners to small river freighters. They will travel approximately 12,000 miles to the top of the world. The sailing of the Nascopie, the stout-hulled patrol ship of the Hudson’s Bay Company, is of vital .importance to those Canadians living on the northern fringe of the Dominion. Among the passengers were members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police going to relieve those members who are returning home after being stationed for years in the far north; doctors and scientists; the Anglican Lord Bishop of the Arctic, a few brides going north to be married, and a number of tourists, among whom was the Hon John Buchan, son of Canada’s Governor-General. The cargo of the Nascopie was most varied. Supplies destined for R.C.M.P. and Hudson’s Bay Company posts as well as missionary stations are carried. This year a number of boats and drums of oil were included. Bags containing the annual mail delivery to the far North are among the most important part of the cargo. Study and research will be carried out by the Government party on board the Nascopie. Help and assistance will be given to all who need it in the north by the medical men. The smaller missionary ship, Marie F. Therese, carried a number of missionaries destined for far northern posts.
