i c NATION READY TO FIGHT < IF NEED BE c ] c UNITY AND CALM NEEDED. AGREEMENT TN PROSPECT. (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) PRAGUE, September 22. President Benes, in a broadcast address, said:—“Changes are occurring throughout Europe, not only in our country. We must face the changes with calm unity. I have no fear for the future of our nation. I have made my plans and cannot be surprised by events. lam ready for any understanding favourable to Czechoslovakia -j and to European pacification and for • collaboration w’ith France, Britain and , Germany. I call on you to preserve , calm .and -await, developments fear- . lessly. We are. prepared, if necessary, £ to fight to the last man for our rights, • just as we are prepared to negotiate. ( If we have given way, it is to our 1 honour. Our policy is firm. Don’t lose optimism and common sense. Our , adversaries expect trouble and would < take advantage of a situation of un- ! rest. Therefore calm is essential. Do > not fear for the future of the Father- , land. There will be an agreement be- ( tween England, France, Czechoslovakia . and Germany and between us and ( Eastern Europe.”
