WAIRARAPA CRICKET
ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL REPORT. REVIEW OF PAST SEASON. The 44th annual report of the Wairarapa Cricket Association states inter alia: —From the beginning of last season there was manifest evidence that the enthusiasm of past seasons would be maintained. The itinerary of representative matches, although perhaps strenuous upon your association and its players, is proof in itself of the efforts of your management committee to provide for and.maintain the standard of cricket in this district. From the financial statements accompanying this report, it will be seen that the association’s finances maintain their improved position. Commencing the season with a credit balance of £2O 19s 4d your executive is pleased to be able to complete its season with a credit balance of £22 7s 9d, an increase ,of £2 11s 7d over and above that of last season. Considering the heavy list of representative fixtures, this balance can be accepted with satisfaction. Club competitions were won as follows:—Senior championship:— Winners, Lansdowne Cricket Club; runners-up, Red Star Cricket Club. Junior championship: Winners, Masterton Cricket Club; runners-up, Red Star Cricket Club. Third grade championship: Winners, College A. Bidwill Cup: Winners, Lansdowne Cricket Club. Darvill-Illingsworth Shield: Winners, Red Star Cricket Club. Arthur Hoar Memorial Cup (best batting average, 5 innings or more): Winner, W. Peterson (Red Star (11 innings, 706 runs, average 88). Bowling Memorial Cup (best bowling average, 20 wickets or more): Winner, F. Hoar (Red Star), (38 wickets for 390 runs, average 10.2). We congratulate the above mentioned teams and individuals on winning their respective competitions. Your executive reports having arranged a fairly strenuous representative season, but owing to adverse weather conditions prevailing on many occasions, several matches were not played. The senior representative games resulted:—Wairarapa v Hawke’s Bay at Napier—drawn. Wairarapa: Ist innings 126, 2nd innings 182; Hawke’s Bay: Ist innings 197, 2nd innings 66 for 8. Wairarapa v Wanganui Colts, at Masterton—won. Wairarapa: Ist innings 340; Wanganui, Ist innings 206; 2nd innings 89 for 8. Junior representatives:—Wairarapa v Wanganui Colts at Masterton—won. Wairarapa v Bush, at Masterton—won. The usual keen rivalry prevailed in the senior division with Lansdowne proving victorious. The same keen competition was evident in the Bidwill Cup matches, and after a closely contested contest, Lansdowne, as holders, were adjudged the winners after their uncompleted game with High School. The failure to complete this game was due to the fact that your association was unable to procure the necessary ground. Both the grounds at the Oval and the School had undergone an earlier annual top-dressing than usual, and unfortunately no play was permitted on either ground. It is the hope of your executive that a similar situation will not recur. It is encouraging to note the continued improved form shown by many of our younger players, and if this form continues, the coming season’s prospects are particularly bright. Your management committee held 11 meetings during the season. The respective attendances of delegates were as follows: —Messrs A. McPherson and R. Lendrum, 11; S. Jenkins, 10; H. B. Massey, M. Reid and S. Brice, 8; G. B. Peterson, 7; and W. Hadley, 4. During the season resignations were received from Messrs H. B. Massey and W. Hadley. Both of these delegates left the district, and their departure' was a definite loss to cricket in general. Your management committee sincerely thank all those who contributed to the success of the season—the umpires, selectors, officers'of the association, representative on the N.Z.C.C., and others; the publicity given by the Press was invaluable and much appreciated; to the Masterton Borough Council and the Wairarapa High School (now College) committee for the use of the grounds, and the respective groundsmen, we tender our thanks and appreciation. It is with regret that your executive records the removal from the district of two of its officers in Messrs H. B. Massey and W. Hadley. Every cricket enthusiast knows of their keenness for the game, and especially are we indebted to them for the time they gave freely
whilst members of your executive. Your executive wishes to offer its congratulations to Mr W. Peterson on his selection and outstanding performance as a member of the Country team. Messrs H. B. Massey and D. Groves were also nominated by our selector, but advised your executive of their inability to play if selected. In retiring from office, you,r executive desires to thank all clubs for the support accorded them during the past season, and trusts that their successors will receive the same generous support. For and on behalf of the management committee, W. S. Brice, president; R. Lendrum, secretary. The Odd Fellows’ Lodge has decided to enter a team for the Wairarapa Cricket Association’s junior competition.
