LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

ADDRESS ON KINDERGARTEN WORK. The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held in the St. Matthew’s Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs L. B. Maunsell) was in thp chair and there was a very good attendance. A welcome was extended to all new office-holders, new members and visitors. The League Choir sang “The Lord is my Shepherd,” and “Lullaby” (Brahms), and Mrs H. Speight sang ‘Ode—A Prayer for Peace.” All these items were very much enjoyed and the performers were heartily thanked. The speaker of the day was Mrs E. H. Dowsett, organising secretary of the Free Kindergarten, Wellington, who gave a very interesting and informative account of the work done by that organisation in the Wellington district. Mrs Dowsett told how it was endeavoured to study the child and give it an environment entirely its own. She gave many illustrations of the different types of children under their care, and the methods used in training them individually. Mrs Dowsett spoke also of the Mothers’ Club, which has been established in Wellington and which is a link between the home and the school. On concluding, Mrs Dowsett was very warmly thanked. The tea hostesses were Mesdames A. Ball, E. J. Burke, A. O. Jones, C. J. Williams and J. Renner.

‘feotured by Dorothy [amour"~~A sar Spanish influence asserts itself again in Hollywood as Dorothy Lamour, Paramount player in “Tropic Holiday,” with Ray Milland, Bob Burns, Martha Raye and Tito Guizar, introduces a new fad for evening. Designed by Edith Head, this romantic black lace gown stresses the importance of the strapless bodice. A modern version of the Mantilla drapes about the head, falling softly over the shoulders.
