A cablegram from Hankow received by the Chinese Consul states: “The Japanese captured the northern portion of Whangchuen, but the Chinese are still holding the southern portion, which commands the northern part, and are still in a favourable position. “In regard to Shangchen, the Chinese hold all elevated positions on the outskirts’ of the city. “One battalion of Chinese troops defending Wuhsieh refused to retire and fought till every man was killed. “Severe fighting occurred yesterday ten miles north of Tsuikiashan and Tienkiachen, which towns are west of Wuhsieh.”
