TRENCH CAVES IN

MAN KILLED AT PATEA. ANOTHER EXTRICATED UNHURT. (Ey Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, September 21. Two men were buried beneath tons of sand when a trench in which they were working collapsed at. Patea this afternoon. One of them, George Edgecombe, Patea. was extricated unharmed, but the other, George Allen, married, Palmerston North, was dead when he was dug out two hours later. The men were working together when the trench, which was 14 feet deep, caved in. Rescuers could work only two at a time. Mr Edgecombe who. was in a standing position, was almost clear when a further slip buried him to the chin, and it was not till ar hour later that he was released. Mr Allen was in a crouching position when the fall occurred and was dead when dug clear. . Death was due to suffocation.
