TRY BEANS ON SUNFLOWERS
A SIMPLE METHOD. Here is my method of growing runnel 1 beans without the expense and trouble involved by staking the plants. As soon as the ground becomes warm in spring, I choose the site for the row. of-beans; then, if the soil requires it, dig in well-rotted manure. Afterwards I sow seeds of giant annual sunflower along the row and when the little plants are about 3in high thin them out to 2in apart As soon as the plants are 3ft high I sow a runner bean seed at the base of each plant. As soon as the beans are large enoguh to climb, they will naturally attach themselves to the sunflower stems. These stems are very strong and will grow 6ft to 7ft high. The beans, in the meantime, will eventually reach the top. The sunflowers will bloom and the beans will hang from the stems. By this method, beauty and utility are combined. —“Popular Gardening,” London.
