ENGLISH CHANNEL
FIRST CROSSING BY AIR. The English Channel was crossed for the first time by air by Jean Pierre Blanchard and Dr J. Jeffreys, an American, in a small balloon, on January 7, 1785, only two months after Jean Francois Pilate de Rozier had been the first man to leave the ground and rise into the air. The balloon which crossed the Channel started from Dover and landed in the forest of Guinnes. The voyage was an adventurous one. for a third of the way across, the balloon began to descend. Anchor’ and ropes were thrown out to lighten it, but two thirds of the journey it again began to descend towards the water. This time Blanchard and Dr. Jeffreys stripped themselves of nearly all their clothing, and to their relief rose into the air again and eventually came safely to earth. It is not generally known that the car of this balloon, in size little more than double a washing tub, with much of the rigging, may be seen in the museum of Calais.
