SALES OPEN WITH ACTIVE COMPETITION GOOD CLEARANCE EFFECTED (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, September 20. At the wool sales, 8529 bales were offered, including 4385 from New Zealand, and 7371 were sold. The market opened better than was expected owing to lesser tension in the European situation. A fairly good selection was offered and competition was active, a good clearance being effected. Compared with the last series closing prices, Merinos were unchanged and occasionally easier, while othei' kinds were very steady. New Zealand greasy crossbred JML brought, BJd.
