DRINK MORE MILK

CONSUMPTION IN MASTERTON LOW. LESS THAN PINT A HEAD. “What should we do about it —start i a drink more milk campaign?” asked the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, when referring at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council to the following report by the Borough Inspector. Mr T. A. Russell on the town milk supply.

“The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis the milk proving of an excellent quality. Several farms were visited. In support of my contention expressed in a previous report that too little milk is consumed in the borough, the following should prove of interest: The total milk sold by our roundsmen including that sold in milk bars is 640 gallons per day. We have in the borough, in addition, approximately 105 privately owned cows. This is a fairly close estimate and allowing 2 gallons per cow per day throughout the year would mean an additional 210 gallons daily, making a total of 850 gallons, an average of less than threequarters of a pint per head. The probability is however that cow-owning families have more per head and the other families less. Authorities agree that children should have 11 pints ner day and that on an average 1 nint ner head of the population is considered to be the minimum that must be consumed to ensure reasonable health in a community.”
