Mr E. J. Hyams, Consul for Czechoslovakia in Wellington, is at present visiting Masterton and is staying at the Midland Hotel. He leaves for Rotorua tomorrow.

Miss Joyce Lyttle, a Wairarapa College pupil, was last night appointed by the Masterton Borough Council to the position of junior librarian at the Masterton Municipal Library. The death occurred at a private hospital in Wellington on Monday of Mr John Montgomery, eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Montgomery of Masterton. The funeral took place yesterday at Karori cemetery. Mr W. H. Cocker, president of Auckland University College, and son of Mrs J. Cocker, of Masterton, and Professor W. A. Sewell will represent the college at the annual business conference of councils of university colleges, to be held in Wellington on October 20. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital this morning, after a brief illness, of Miss Elsie Ammundsen, at the age of 21 years. The late Miss Ammundsen, who was a daughter of Mr and ‘Mrs M. Ammundsen, of Ngaturi, Pahiatua, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday. She was born in Masterton. The funeral will take place tomorrow, and will leave the Presbyterian Church, Pahiatua, after a service, commencing at 4 p.m., for the Pahiatua Hospital.

Canterbury University College Rhodes Scholarship nominees are Messrs Neal H. Buchanan and Crowley Weston. Mr Buchanan, who is 22 years of age, was educated at Christ’s College and has been at Canterbury College since 1935, taking degree courses in law and arts. Mr Weston was educated at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. A bachelor of laws, he has been admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court; He is sitting for his master of laws degree this year.

The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr John Miller, Mayor of Invercargill, says an Invercargill Press Association message. He was in his fifth term of office and fourth successive term as president of the Southland League. He was a member of the Southland Hospital Board, a member of the executive of the South Island Travel Association, and a member of the executive of the New Zealand Municipal Electric Supply Association. Born in Scotland, Mr Miller began his career as a chemist. For many years he practised as a veterinarian, and went to India with remounts. He set up in practice in Invercargill. MiMiller contested the Invercargill seat at the last election in the interests of the National' Party.

The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Kathleen Eve Nathan, wife of Mr S. George Nathan, Wadestown. The late Mrs Nathan was a woman of much personal charm and was exceedingly popular in social circles. She was the daughter of the late Mr H. W. Lever, who, prior to his retirement, was inspector in New Zealand for the Bank of New South Wales. Both her mother and father died in Wellington only last year. Mrs Nathan is survived by two sons, Mr Benson Nathan (Wairarapa), and Mr Michael Nathan (Wellington), and one daughter, Mrs Murray Benjamin, Auckland. Her sisters are Mesdames Stronach Paterson, W. J. K. Jennings, and Moatta Doughty, all of Wellington. Mrs Nathan had been ill for over a year. The funeral will be a private one.

’ The death occurred at Wanganui yesterday of Miss Mildred Ann Newcombe, whose long and varied record of public service made her well known and respected in the city. At the time of her death Miss Newcombe was a member of the Wanganui Hospital Board and secretary of the Plunket Society, the Karitane Hospital and'the Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society. Miss Newcombe was for many years a member of the board of governors of Wanganui Girls’ College and president of the Wanganui College Old Girls’ Association. Her association with the Girl Guide movement in Wanganui extended over a considerable period and during her active association with the movement she was commissioner and president. She was also a justice of the peace. Her service on the hospital board was from 1927 to 1929 and from 1935 to the time of her death. Two years ago Miss Newcombe was made an honorary life member of the Wanganui branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Miss Newcombe was the daughter of Mr Francis George Newcombe, whose death occurred last week at Wanganui at the age. of 91.
