GREYTOWN

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. CHINESE BABY ADOPTED. (“Times-Ages” Special.) The Mayor, Mr. A. W. Horton, presided at the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council, held last night. On the motion of the Mayor, votes of condolence were passed with the relatives of the late Messrs. D. P. Loasby, an ex-Mayor, J. Hodge, a former councillor, and S. S. Bish, a former Town Clerk. Referring to a suggestion made at last meeting that an intensive campaign be launched to boost gas appliances, it was stated by Mr. Horton that the Gas Committee had decided to take no action in the meantime. Any approved person who wished to purchase any gas appliances would be treated on the usual terms. The Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote inviting the Mayor and councillors to a reunion and farewell gathering to Superintendent W. Gates, to be held on October 1. The invitation was accepted. The council also approved of the action of the brigade in appointing Mr. James Wood to the position of superintendent and Fire Inspector. Superintendent Wood joined the brigade in 1919 and was elected deputy-superin-tendent in 1930. Referring to an appeal by the Chinese Refugee Children Fund Committee for financial assistance, the Mayor said that about £lB had been collected in Greytown, while several publicspirited citizens had contributed £4 to adopt a Chinese baby. It was a worthy object .and he felt that the council should “adopt a baby” for a year at a cost of £4. His suggestion was agreed to. The Minister of Labour wrote stating that he had received a request by the council that an additional four registered and eligible men be made available under Scheme No. 13. He had investigated 'the position and understood that there were three married men now available on the local register. Approval was accordingly given for a subsidy on the basis of the full wages cost to be made available in respect of the employment of the men and of one additional man already placed for a period of eleven weeks. An additional commitment of £206 had been allocated under that authority to cover the wages cost in respect of the employment of the men concerned. A letter was received from the Greytown Amateur Swimming Club advising that the Greytown Amateur Dramatic Club intended presenting a play, the proceeds of which would be devoted to the funds of the Swimming Club. As it was understood that the council had no power to make a reduction in the rent of the hall, a request was made for a donation towards the funds of the club. Councillors considered that it was a worthy object and it was decided to make a grant of £1 Is. SUNDAY SCHOOL CONCERT. The Methodist Sunday School was packed last night when the scholars gave a most successful concert. The items were well rendered and much praise is due to Mrs Ross and the Sunday School teachers for coaching the performers. A birthday cake (given by Mrs Langford and cut by Mrs Ross) was lit with one candle to celebrate the first birthday of the Young Lions’ League. The Rev J. Harkness expressed his appreciation of the fine effort, and complimented Mrs Ross and the performers. The serving of supper brought an enjoyable function to a close. Personal. Mr Roy Haigh, of the Post Office staff, Otorohanga, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs E. J. Haigh, Main Street. Miss M. Webster has resumed her duties at the Greytown District High School.
