OBITUARY
Mr. J. C. SMITH. The death occurred this morning, at the Masterton Hospital, of Mr J. C. Smith, a well-known farmer of the Te Ore Ore Soldier Settlement. The late Mr. Smith was born in England 46 years ago, and came to New Zealand in 1912. He was engaged in farming at Te Ore Ore and later took up the homestead section of the Ractliffe Estates when that property was purchased by the Government for soldier settlement and cut up into farms. He had been ill only for about a week, pneumonia combined with war injuries bringing about his death. The late Mr Smith was very popular among a wide circle of friends who will learn with deep regret of his death. He was a member of the local Acclimatisation Society, the Masterton Gun Club, Te Ore Ore School Committee, Wairarapa Gun Club Committee, and took a keen interest in sport generally, rendering valuable service to all the projects which he took an active part in. The late Mr. Smith leaves a’ widow and two daughters, to whom deep sympathy will be extended in their bereavement. The funeral will take place on Thursday, leaving the late residence at Te Ore Ore at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
