RELATIONS CONFERENCE

IMPRESSIONS OF DELEGATES GOOD PURPOSE SERVED. (By Telegraph Association.) AUCKLAND. September 19. A number of New Zealand and overseas delegates to the second British Commonwealth Relations Conference in Sydney arrived by the Monterey. Many are remaining in Australia for a short while and will visit New Zealand during the next three weeks to study conditions and see the country’s scenic attractions. The Marquis of Lothian, leader of the United Kingdom delegation, and the Hon Pandit Hirday Nath, leader of the Indian delegation, will arrive by the Niagara on October 3. A majority of the Canadian delegates and also Messrs Lionel Curtis and H. V. Hodson, editor of the “Round Table,” expect to reach Wellington on October 13. New Zealand delegates and others declared that the conference had been most valuable from an Empire point of view, although sharp differences of opinion at times had been revealed. “A particularly interesting feature of the conference,’ said Mr G. R. Powles, of Wellington, “was that we New Zealanders were able to obtain almost as complete a picture of the Empire as could be gained by a fairly extensive tour.” “A great deal of interest was displayed in New Zealand problems,” said ivir George Lawn, Christchurch, especially the trend of social legislation.” Mr Lawn added that the attitude appeared to be one of suspended judgment and hope. Efforts were being made to assist a solution of Empire problems.
