MIDDLE A POPULAR WINNER.

(By

“The Cynic.”)

One of the most popular wins recorded at the Wanganui meeting was that of Middle in the Higgle Handicap. Middle is raced by Mr lan Higgle whose father played a prominent part in the administration of the Wanganui Jockey Club's affairs for many years. The Higgle Handicap is the club’s acknowledgment in commemoration of those services, so there was some sentimental attachment to Middles entiy for this event. Middle is not a sound horse, but going on Saturday was easy and a concession. of 171bs. from Brazen King, plus vigorous riding by H. N. Wiggins, enabled the son of Centrepiece to head off his younger rival. Middle was put to hurdling in the winter and distinguished himself with a forward showing for nearly two miles against Full of Scotch in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. Later Middle won a hurdle race at . New Plymouth. Middle’s sire, Centrepiece, was Stonyhurst-bred, being a half-brother by The Ace to Cricket Bat, Ball Dress, Semper Paratus and Full Feather. Middle’s dam, Sea Battery, is richly bred as she-descends from the Sylvia branch of the Juliet family.

Well Bred. A two-year-old gelding by Robespierre from Zora by Catmint from Verintia. dam of Gold Cross and Rebel Chief, is at present being put through his preliminaries at Riccarton by his owner-trainer, H. Kearns. He is a solid youngster and will probably require plenty of time. Night Dress. Night Dress is showing improved work on the tracks and may shape well in his next appearance. Defaulter. Defaulter is getting through good useful work at Riccarton and all going well should be fit and ready to race in the Dunedin Guineas. The Stonyhurst Mares. More than 20 mares are at the Stonyhurst Stud, and most of them are in foal this season. They will be mated with the Stonyhurst stallions., Winning Hit, Cricket Bat, and Jericho. Five dry mares will be sent away. Good Sight (Winning Hit—Equipment) and Fracas (Winning Hit—Scrimmage) will be sent to Bulandshar, Stout Heart (Winning Hit —Equipment) and Submit (Beau Pere—Timid) to Foxbridge, and Robbie’s Mistake (Psychology—Lovelock) to Man’s Pal. The Late Sir Charles Clifford’s Stakes. Although his total, £4,480, was less than half that of the previous year, Sir Charles Clifford again topped the list of winning owners in the Dominion last season. Related to Golden Slipper. A two-year-old filly by Pink Coat from Gold Dress, and owned by Mr J. M. Samson, has recently joined F. A. Roberts’s team at Riccarton. Through her great-great-dam this filly is related to Golden Slipper. Half-Brother to Gold Rod. Night Attack, who started thirteenth favourite in the Maiden Race at Wanganui on Thursday, and ran unplaced is one of the two three-year-olds that were nominated for this year’s New Zealand Cup. He is a half-brother, by Night Raid, to Gold Rod, his dam, Oreum. being a daughter of that good mare Desert Gold. Transfer Approved. A transfer of the engagements of the two-year-old by Gustavo —Turbine from L. C. Hazlett to P. T. Hogan has been approved by the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Turbine is by Tractor from Charybdis, the dam of two good race horses in Master Sandstone and Water Power. Offer Accepted. A. E. Ellis has accepted the rides on Flood Tide in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and will leave for Melbourne early next month. He would have left earlier, but is to remain for the marriage of his brother, L. J. Ellis, at the end of this month. Dunstan. The Siegfried colt Dunstan was an interesting member of the field for the Ashburton Handicap today because of the fact that he holds a classic engagements later in the season. He won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes and is bred to stay as his dam. Arbitration was got by Tribulation —Mere Mere by San Fran —Maude, by St. Leger—Hilda, by Musket from Ouida, one of the best staying taproots in the Stud Book. It has produced such great stayers as Antares, . Artillery, Fulmen, Mahutonga, Hilda, Strathmore, The Barb and Sweet Nell. Bright Prospects. Gay Son, who was third in the Wanganui Guineas, is more robust than some of the other Beau Peres, and his prospects are fairly bright. Homily is a racy filly, but she is not assisted by her “skittishness.” Lord Cavendish should have done better than run seventh, as he was more seasoned than most of the others. Sudan and Taurangi performed merely moderately, and Peerless, who failed entirely to do herself justice, may be seen to much greater advantage later on. McLean Stakes Candidate. The Iliad—Set Sail filly, who is to race in the two-year-old events at Dunedin, has been shaping well in her work at Riverton. She is a neatlymade youngster, and just the type to corrie early. She is a half-sister to Sailing Lady, one of the best graduates from the hack ranks in Southland last season.
