AMERICAN' TENNIS
| NATIONAL SINGLES CONTESTS WOOD DEFEATS GRANT. By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 16. Results at the national singles championships tourney are: — Men’s singles: Wood beat B. M. Grant (U.S.A.) 6/2, 6/3, 6/2. Displaying uncanny accuracy in placements, Wood swept through Grant in a surprisingly easy manner. Grant was given practically no opportunity to show his famous retrieving tactics, for Wood scored consistently or used cunning drop shots and lobs. Budge (U.S.A.) beat Hopman (Australia), 6/3, 6/1, 6/3. Hopman, whose cool and canny plan has attrected a big following, drew twelve thousand spectators to the stadium, the largest attendance so far during the championships. He played shrewdly but failed to take even a set from Budge, who was the old Bulge for the first time during the tournament. If the crowd was disappointed it soon forgot it.in the excitement of seeing Budge suddenly regain his form and play in a smashing, well nigh, errorless manner. Hopman was unable to match the terrific force of Budge’s drives and resorted to chopping tactics t 6 nullify the lack of the length of his own drives but it was a useless effort. Ladies’ singles: Ms S. Fabyan (U.S.A.) beat Mlle Jedzejowska 6/1, 6/4. Mrs Fabyan, at the peak of her form, simply outgeneralled and outplayed her opponent in every department of the game. Her control was perfect and she was consistently a step ahead of the slower Polish girl, who was left flatfooted for numerous placements. Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.) beat Miss K. Stammers (Britain), 6/8, 6/3, 6/0. Miss Stammers played the best game but the American’s stamina and stroking power was too much for the slighter British player. It was a baseline duel throughout, neither coming to the net often.
