COUNTY AFFAIRS

WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL MEETING. DAMAGE IN RECENT STORM. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held in Carterton yesterday, the chairman, Mr Duncan McGregor, presiding. There were also present Councillors F. Court, F. Joblin. C. A. Cameron, A. E. Reid, E. W. Allen and W. Renall. •The treasurer reported a credit balance of £5024 16s Od. Receipts since last meeting totalled £8782 9s 9d, and accounts amounting to £3763 13s 9d were passed. The Clerk, Mr E. T. Beaven, reported that practically 50 per cent of the rates had been collected.

The county overseer, Mr J. Wallace, reported general maintenance and repair work in all ridings. There had been several fairly big slips on various roads, and those on Mahupuku and Eringa Roads were not yet cleared. He estimated that about 20 yards of metal had been washed off the Tupurupuru Settlement road during the recent flood. The Admiral and Wainuioru Valley roads fared badly with slips, being blocked for several days. Mr R. P. George waited on the Council in reference to the water which flooded his property from a pit across the road. The surplus water was caused through the water race culvert not being large enough to allow the water to get away. It banked up in the races and flowed across the road, flooding his property. The Council decided that the local ity be inspected by the two overseers and Councillor Renall, who would report to the next meeting. The water race overseer, Mr H. J. McKenzie, referring to the recent rain said: “The heavy rain filled all the races to overflowing. The water came off the hills like young rivers and filled up all the races. Several people rang me up to say that the water races were running over. I do not know what they expected me to do!”
