Main Trunk Line.

The abandonment of one of the projected tunnels on the uncompleted section of the South Island Main Trunk railway line has already been decided upon, and the abandonment of another is under consideration (says the Christchurch “Press”). Both tunnels were to have been fairly short, and there will be no difficulty in making a small deviation in the one case and in constructing an open cutting in the second. The reason for the change of plans is that the engineers found difficulty in tunnelling through rubbly slip material. If both tunnels are abandoned this will reduce the number of tunnels on the line to 20 —still two in excess of the number on the muchtunnelled Midland line.
