FISH OIL

as a pig food. INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. To the meeting of the Wellington district Pig Council the Supervisor, Mr E. P. Nielson, reported as follows on an experiment conducted with fish oil as an additional food for pigs:—“A trial with a high grade blended fish oil was carried out on a farm at Koputaroa in connection with the Ohau club. A complete litter of eleven pigs was divided into groups of six and five respectively. Both pens were under comparable conditions in all respects and were fed 11b of barley meal and Jib of meat meal per pig per day throughout the trial which continued over 84 days commencing May 27. For 60 days the pigs in both pens received 31bs of swedes per pig. The only difference in the food supplied to both pens was that in pen No 1 each pig received one dessertspoon of oil per day throughout the trial. The results were:—Gain per pen for 84 days—No 1 pen 2391b5, No 2 pen 1281bs, gain per pig for 84 days—No 1 pen 401bs, No 2 pen 25.61b5. The additional per pig live weight gain of those in the oil group was 151bs. This would represent lOlbs of dressed flesh per pig. The cost of oil was 5s while 601bs dressed flesh at 6d per lb returning 30s, leaving a net return on oil of 255. In addition to this return, there is also a noticeable difference in the general health of the pigs. This difference will be checked up as the pigs in both ’roups near slaughter weights.”
