TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies WANGANUI GUINEAS WINNER (By “The Cynic.”)

In winning the Wanganui Guineas, Russian Ballet showed both pace and stamina, and she thoroughly deserved her win, which might have been harder to achieve had Amigo’s rider a little more alert to the danger if el giving the leaders such a start over the business stages, especially on a track like Wanganui. There did not appear anything high-class about the form, though the performances were sound, and there seems no doubt that both Russian Ballet and Amigo will stay. On the other hand, Gay Son gave the impression that sprinting will be his best, but, of course, allowance has to be made for improvement, and in the same category can be placed Homily, Peerless,, and Sudan, though there was no excuse for them on the day. Russian Ballet, incidentally, gave Mr Russell Grace his first win in the event. She is a good advertisement for her sire, Nightmarch, and she is the first classic winner sired by him. She is a member of the famous Eulogy family, her dam, Praise, being by Limond —Eulogy, and she has been a bargain at the 350gns. she cost as a yearling. Amongst her successes last season was the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Her next start will probably be in the Avondale Guineas. The Buzzer. One of the most interesting runners -at the Wanganui meeting was the Auckland Cup winner The Buzzer, who had a race in the open sprint on Saturday, and although outpaced early by the sprinters, he was travelling along very smoothly at the right end. The Buzzer looks in really exceptional order to begin another season’s racing, and by the time he has to fulfil his en-

gagement in the New Zealand Cup he should be near his best. Impressive Two-Year-Old. One of the most impressive of the horses who contested the first two-year-old race of the season, the Debutant Stakes af’Wanganui, was Submission, Mr G. M. Currie’s Limond — Homage filly, who finished third. Submission made such a splendid late run into third place that it is not unreasonable to assume that on a bigger course she would have won. She is a nicely-turned filly, will not lack size, has good action, and should develop into a smart galloper. The first of the Bulandshars to race, Kobi, was a well-fancied runner in this field. Kobi is a solid bay colt belonging to Mr F. Ormond, owner of Bulandshar. He ran a good race and finished fifth. Racing should do a lot for him and he should be seen to greater advantage on a bigger course. His dam, Lucinette, has produced a speedy hack in Flammarion (to Arausis). She is nicely bred, being by Martian from the New Zealand Cup winner, Lady Lucy, who was by Seaton Delaval from Hilda, by Musket from Ouida. The winner of the race, Pas de Cheval, is by Lackham, a sire of speed, from Lady Elusive. He is smart and handled the turns splendidly, but he was being overhauled at the end. He is a neat colt, and is trained by G. W. New, who won the race a year ago with Surmount. New’s stable also produced Vascones (Gascony — Talari), who was better fancied than the winner.

The runner-up, Tableau, is a Beau Pere filly out of Painted Screen, by Leighton from Valvate by Feramorz from Shrill. Shrill, an importation, was a particularly nice mare who won a Thompson Handicap. Tableau is likely looking. By no means last in the matter of good looks was Silver Bat, who finished sixth in the race. She is a chestnut filly by Cricket Bat from Reckless, a Paladin mare from the same family as Thespian. Silver Bat was handy to the leaders all the way and should see a better day. Algerian (Beau Pere —Zarene) was not well enough served in the running to be seen to advantage. On the whole it was a worthy company. If might have included no coming champions, but it included several who should do well on the turf.

Liking for Course. After returning from the Grand National meeting All Irish was on the easy list for a brief period, with the result that he has freshened up nicely. Last week this' jumper was responsible for a good work-out over six furlongs, and the effort will ensure him being accorded plenty of support in the hurdle races at Avondale. On the same course in April last All Irish won the Hobsonville Hurdles in convincing style with 11.4 on his back, and he will be hard to beat at the approaching meeting.

Hardy Argentic. Argentic, fast reaching the veteran stage, comes up remarkably well each season and he is due to make a start among the sprinters at Ashburton. There is little likelihood of his being ready for such a test at this stage, but 'it will all help towards his preparation for the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup—races in which he has already had plenty of experience.

Fast Youngster. Cyprine, a two-year-old half-sister by Posterity to the New Zealand Derby winner, Cylinder, and to Cyrillian, may accompany Defaulter if he makes an Australian trip. Though Posterity fillies have not been of much account in the past, Cyprine is exceptionally fast and may be the exception. Her first race will be in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton this month and that race may give a line on her future prospects. Like Defaulter, she. is owned by Mr H. D. Greenwood. In Favour. When Erlick contested the Auckland Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting last month solid support was accorded him, but the best he could do was to finish fourth. He showed abundance of speed in the race, and it was only over the final stages that he showed signs of weakening. When a horse is entrusted with plenty of money it is invariably a sure indication that his prospects are highly regarded, so Erlick may do better before the season is much further advanced. Royal Choice, Royal Choice, the winner of the Trial Handicap at Wanganui, scored one small stake last season in 18 starts. He was got by Laughing Prince from Jlartianette, by Martian —Equitas, the dam of Oratress and Murihaupo. Oratress won the New Zealand Cup and produced Oratrix, who also won the big race at Riccarton. Concentrate, another good performer, is a brother to Oratrix, got by Kilbroney from Oratress.

Elegy Returns to Work. At the last New Zealand Cup Meeting Elegy ran second to Brunhild in the New Zealand Oaks. It was then stated that she was to be retired to the stud, but she has rejoined Mrs J. Campbell’s active team at Riccarton. The Difference. Alma is rated in the Geraldine Cup as a better stayer than Ponty, a winner of the Wellington Cup. The difference between Silver Streak and Ponty over a mile and a-quarter and six furlongs is 21b. Silver Streak gives 41b. in the Geraldine Cup and 61b. in the Squatters' Handicap. Approaching the £200,000 Mark. Mr E. J. Watt, owner of Gold Rod, won about £60,000 in stakes in about 15 years’ racing in New Zealand. He left Hawke’s Bay for Australia in 1915, and in that country his gross winnings total about £130,000. Midnight Sun and Bridge (New Zealand Cup winners). King Billy, Aborigine, Ventura, Royal Scotch, Bunting, Palaver, and Indian Queen were among the good ones he raced in this country, and in Australia he has had Mountain Knight, Waikare, Gold Rod, Pershore, Ventura, Midnight Sun, Bunting, and many others to represent him. The ex-New Zealander has-only to experience a continuance of his consistent good fortune to reach the £200,000 mark this season.

A Well-bred Two-year-old. Master Hotspur, who is likely to be favourite for the John Grigg Stakes, comes from the successful Eulogy family, his dam, Impetuous, being by Limond from Pennon, an English-bred half-sister by Coriander to Humbug, Commendation, Esteem, Fulsome, Praise, Eulalie, and Homage. Impetuous’s second foal was Elange, who did well in Australia last season.

Hogan’s Team. P. T. Hogan’s team now in Australia comprises Top Row, a four-year-old horse by Colossus from Hunt’s Up; Netherlea, a three-year-old gelding by Iliad from Pollyform; On Call, a three-year-old filly by Paper Money from Call Bird; Aranui, a two-year-old colt by Colossus from Cupid’s Dart; and Queen, of Song, the veteran of the team, which has raced in Australia before. Nigger Boy. Wingatui’s only representative for the John Grigg Stakes, Nigger Boy, continues to work attractively, and from his quiet manners on the tracks it is difficult to realise that he is only a two-year-old. He promises to start one of, if not the best reasoned youngster in the race. For Australia. Today, Catalogue, who won the Winter Cup at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting in August, - will be shipped to Australia, where he is engaged in the Melbourne Cup, to be run on Tuesday, November 1. Catalogue will be shipped from Auckland and will be accompanied by Conveyer, who runs in the same ownership. The owner, Mrs A. Jamieson, will go across a little later, and with her will be her brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs E. L. Barnes. Mr Barnes, who formerly owned horses, recently retired from business in Palmerston North. Catalogue has won the Winter Cup twice, but the class to be met at Riccarton in August is not as strong as is likely to be encountered in Australia in the spring. Conveyer has raced with moderate success in the lower grade. He is an aged gelding by Tractor from Prima Lux; and Catalogue, also aged, is by Lord Quex from Catalani. Catalogue’s weight in the Melbourne Cup is 8.4, 161 b. below the weight given the French-bred horse Actor, who tops the handicap. The weights of other horses of special interest to New Zealanders are: —Mala 9.0, Royal Chief 8.12, Stretto, 8.9, Flood Tide 8.8, Willie Win 8.8, Cerne Abbas 8.3, Queen of Song 8.3, Lynch Law 8.0, Royal Order 7.10, Jack Tar 7.7, Cheval de Volee 7.5, International 7.5, Sly Fox 7.5, Amigo 7.3, and Dannevirke 7.2.
