AMERICAN TENNIS

—. MEN’S SINGLES CHAMPtONSHHIP. HOPMAN BEATS McNEILL. (Recd This Day, 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 14. In the U.S.A, championships in the nen’s singles Hopman beat McNeill 6/4, 6/3, 7/5, and Grant beat Quist 3/1, 4/6, 6/1, 7/5. Hopman won almost at will. His opponent’s backhand was vulnerable but above all the Australian’s shots were coming off to perfection. He mixed the pace successfully and took .he net with telling effect. The match between Quist and Grant was disappointing. Foot faults were constantly called against the Australian and his play was below normal. His backhand was strangely weak. He repeatedly took the net at the wrong moment. In the ladies’ championship singles Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.) beat Miss D. Stevenson (Australia), 6/1, 6/4, and Mrs S. Fabyian (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Coyne (Australia), 8/6, 6/2. Miss Marble was completely at the top of her form, and forced the Australian with deep piercing shots and then stormed after them to the net cutting off weak returns by means of slashing volleys or overhead kills. The quarter finals will bring Miss Lumb (England), Miss Wynne (Australia), Miss D. Bundy (U.S.A.), Mme. R. Mathieu (France), Miss Marble (U.S.A.I, Miss K. Stammers (England), Mrs Fabyan (U.S.A.), and Mlle. Jedrzejowska together.
