FAMOUS COMPOSER’S TRIBUTE TO YOUNG VIOLINIST. When Guila Bustabo, the young American violinist who is touring Australia, paid her first visit to Finland last year she went to his country home to let Sibelius hear her play his D Minor Concerto. Sibelius listened I to the youthful player, and at the conclusion of the performance he said that the American girl interpreted the concerto in a way no other violinist had ever done. “You have caught just that spirit of the mysterious north —the dark forests, the moonlight on the blue, cold snow and the dancing northern lights,” the veteran composer exclaimed. “The Cingalee” in Gisborne? Production of Lionel Monckton’s musical play. “The Cingalee,” recently performed in Masterton, is under con-
sideration by the executive of the Gisborne Amateur Operatic Society, and a decision as to the suitability of the play to the range of local talent will be made at an early date. The society resumed activity last season, after several years during which it was considered wise to nurse its funds, and during which no productions were offered to the public. The success of the “Rio Rita” season last year gave much encouragement to the committee, and stimulated interest both among amateur performers and the general public. French Accent. “Is your new French star, Fifi La Belle shaping well?” ‘’Well. I'm having trouble with her speech?” “Ah, difficulties with her French accent?” “Yeah, I’ve been working on it for months; but you can still tell she comes from Liverpool.”
