SOUTHERN SPRING CAMPAIGN
(By “The Cynic.")
The Ashburton meeting, to be held this week, will start another spring campaign in the South Island. All the indications point to a liberal supply of horses, with Riccarton stables contributing freely to the fields. The work on the Riccarton tracks is gradually assuming a more interesting character. Trench Fight, a candidate for the New Zealand Cup, has been doing strong work for some time and without anything in the nature of serious trials, he is galloping well up to seven furlongs. He is due for a race at Ashburton and should be forward enough to make a good showing, while a trip to Trentham may follow next month. Wild Chase, though only recently put in work, has fined down a lot and is now doing useful half-mile sprints. He may resume racing at Trentham. He lost form last season and a good deal of interest will attach to his reappearance.
Easy Sprints. Sovereign Lady and Disdain are in good health, but easy sprints are all they are required to do at present. They are not likely to race before the -Riccarton carnival in November, as there is plenty of time for more strenuous tasks.
Sparkle is bowling along in good style and looks a promising sort for hack races over a journey. Her mate, Colonel Rouge, is sprinting freely and may soon be in the money. They will both be racing at Ashburton. Rebellion will have friends if he is started in,the maiden race at Ashburton. He is putting plenty of dash into his sprinting work.
C. Emerson is keeping Happy Night and Nightcalm busy and they may show up in early spring races. He has given two of Dr. Louisson’s quartet, Royal Pat and Great Baby, some sprinting work, but the two juveniles, Miss Otis and Benevolent, have not been, hurried. Kinnoull has done a lot of strong work, without much fast galloping. He is on the burly side yet, but he may have a race at Ashburton. Density has been sprinting very well and is in good fettle to start her spring racing at Geraldine, with Dunedin to follow. She has speed but has to show that she can stay.
The three-year-old. Defaulter has started useful gallops, following strong work, which has broughi him up to good condition. He is to contest the Dunedin Guineas, with a race in the open sprint on the first day as his only preliminary. With his Australian trip cancelled, A. McAuley will now prepare Dictate for spring racing nearer home. Dictate is engaged at Ashburton but he may not be ready for a mile and a quarter, though he is going on well in his preparation. Lady Leigh has been sprinting well and will be ready to show good form at early meetings. Having run out of hack class at the Grand National meeting, she will make her first appearance in open company at Ashburton, where she will have an advantage in condition over some of her better performed opponents.
Juvenile Trial. The two-year-olds, with their first race to be provided at Ashburton, are now coming into the limelight. The Ringmaster colt, Master Hotspur, a well-grown youngster, did no more than was expected when he beat Viking’s sister, Ben Regis, over three furlongs this week. He is a quick beginner and a bold galloper. The filly will be useful later on.
Jumpers. Novice jumpers continue to make good progress in their education at Riccarton, and some interesting displays have been seen this week over the schooling hurdles. Dividend went with great dash over four flights. He travelled at a sound pace, jumping fast and straight. A good future seems in store for him as a jumper. Aymon followed Dividend over the first jump, at which he got up in the air. He ran off at the second, and though he got over later, the round was not impressive.
The Sandwichman and Patuma were mates over four hurdles. While it was not a perfect exhibition, the two horses shaped very well and they may not need much more experience before they are highly proficient. This pair and Dividend are engaged in the hurdle race at Ashburton next week. Pipiwhauroa went over the pony jumps as a preliminary to a run over two of the big obstacles. He gave a dashing exhibition and he looks on the way to being a good hurdler.' Top Rank, a good performer, with a win to his credit at the Grand National meeting, showed his best form in a school over six hurdles. He will have to be reckoned with at early spring meetings.
